MacBook Longevity Guide · 2026

How Long Do
MacBooks Last?

Short answer: 7 to 10 years for Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3) and 5 to 7 years for Intel. We sell and repair hundreds of Macs a year in Marion, Ohio — here is what we actually see come through the shop.

Lifespan by generation

Longest life

Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3)

7–10 years

No fan (Air models), unified memory — fewer mechanical parts to fail. Software support expected through the early 2030s.

Good value range

Intel (2018–2020)

5–7 years

Fan-cooled, thermal throttling under sustained load. Still capable — most run macOS Sequoia fine today.

Short runway

Intel (2015–2017)

3–5 years remaining

No longer receiving macOS updates. Security patches stop eventually. Budget pick only — not a long-term investment.

* Estimates based on Apple's historical software support timelines and typical failure rates. Actual lifespan depends on battery replacement history, physical care, and workload intensity.

What actually kills MacBooks early

In order of frequency, based on what we see come into the shop:

1

Battery degradation

Years 3–5

Battery replacement ($139–$199 third-party) adds 3–5 more years. Apple Silicon batteries are soldered — requires a shop.

2

macOS software cutoff

Years 6–8 (varies by model)

Apple stops supporting older hardware. Your Mac still works — just no longer gets security updates. Run it offline or in isolated tasks.

3

Storage failure

Random (rare before year 7)

Apple Silicon uses soldered SSD — not replaceable on most models. Always keep a backup. NVMe failure rate is very low before year 7.

4

Physical damage

Anytime (accidents)

Cracked screen: $299–$499. Liquid damage: $300–$600 or total loss. A case + sleeve is the single best longevity investment you can make.

5

Thermal paste/fan (Intel only)

Years 5–8

Repasting for $80–$120 at a shop recovers sustained performance on fan-cooled models. Fanless Air models never need this.

Why fanless MacBook Airs last longer

MacBook Air (M1, M2, M3) — Fanless

  • No fan = no moving parts to fail
  • No dust accumulation inside chassis
  • No thermal paste drying out over years
  • Silent under all conditions
  • Runs warm but within Apple-designed thermal limits

MacBook Pro — Fan Cooled

  • Active cooling allows sustained max performance
  • Fan can accumulate dust — blowing out annually helps
  • Thermal paste dries after 5+ years under heavy load
  • Repasting ($80–$120) is an easy repair at year 5–6
  • Fan bearings rarely fail on Macs (better quality than PC fans)

For most people doing everyday tasks — web, docs, video calls, streaming — the fanless MacBook Air is the longer-lived machine in practice. The Pro is the right choice if you regularly pin the CPU or GPU for extended periods (rendering, compiling, simulations).

How to make your MacBook last longer

Replace the battery at year 4–5

When you hit 400+ charge cycles or notice noticeably shorter battery life, get a battery swap. It is the single most cost-effective thing you can do to extend Mac life. $139–$199, adds 3–5 years.

Use a hardshell case

A $30 hardshell case prevents the most common physical damage — corner drops, scratched chassis, and minor liquid splashes that would otherwise hit the vents or keyboard.

Back up to Time Machine weekly

SSD failure before year 7 is rare, but it does happen. Time Machine to an external drive (or a NAS) means you lose hardware at worst — not your data. Storage is cheap. Your data is not.

Avoid hot cars and humidity

Heat is the primary accelerant of battery degradation. Never leave your Mac in a car on a hot day. Avoid humid environments — even "light" condensation reaching the logic board is the start of corrosion.

Keep macOS updated

Each macOS update includes security fixes and often performance improvements for Apple Silicon. Staying current also means you stay on the supported list longer.

Clean the fan vents (Pro only)

Every 12–18 months, use compressed air to clear the fan intake vents on MacBook Pro models. Five seconds of air on the vents prevents years of heat-related degradation.

Does buying refurbished affect how long it lasts?

A refurbished MacBook lasts the same number of years from the day you buy it as a new one would from the same point in time. The age of the hardware is what determines the remaining software support window — not whether it was previously owned.

A 1-year-old refurbished M2 MacBook Air has 6 to 7 years of macOS support remaining. A new M2 MacBook Air bought today has 6 to 7 years of macOS support remaining. Same timeline, $200–$400 price difference.

The one variable to check: battery cycle count. A heavily used machine may have 300–500 cycles on the battery already. Our Luxury Certified Macs require 80%+ battery health at time of sale — but it is always worth asking the cycle count before buying from anyone.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a MacBook last on average?

Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 and newer, 2020 onward) typically last 7 to 10 years before they feel slow or lose software support. Intel MacBooks (2018–2020) run well for 5 to 7 years. The main factors are which macOS updates Apple includes the model in and whether the battery has been replaced. We see M1 and M2 Airs coming back for battery swaps at year 4 and running another 4 years without issue.

Do refurbished MacBooks last as long as new ones?

Yes — a 2-year-old refurbished M2 MacBook Air has 6 to 8 years of useful life remaining. "Refurbished" means it was owned before, not that it is worn out. Our Luxury Certified Macs are fully functional Apple hardware in clean condition — no cracked screens, no missing keys, no swollen batteries — and arrive wiped and ready to set up, backed by our own 1-year warranty. The computer lasts the same number of years from the day you buy it — you just paid $200 to $400 less to start.

When does Apple stop supporting a MacBook?

Apple typically supports each Mac model for 7 to 8 years of macOS updates. After that, the Mac still works — it just stops receiving new operating system versions. Security patches also end eventually. As a rule: if you buy a 2-year-old refurbished Mac today, you have at least 5 to 6 years of guaranteed software support before you hit that wall.

How long does the MacBook battery last before it needs replacing?

Apple rates most Mac batteries for 1,000 full charge cycles before capacity drops below 80%. At one full charge per day, that is roughly 3 years. In real use — partial charges, overnight charging — most people hit 80% health around year 4 to 5. A battery replacement at that point ($139–$199 at a reputable shop) effectively resets the clock on battery life and adds years to the laptop's useful life.

Is it worth buying a MacBook that is 3 years old?

Absolutely — especially if it is Apple Silicon. A 3-year-old M1 MacBook Air has 4 to 7 years of life remaining, still receives the latest macOS, and costs $250–$400 less than a new equivalent. The main thing to understand is battery health: a battery has full charge cycles before it drops toward 80% capacity. Under 400 cycles is essentially new. Between 400 and 700 cycles is normal wear. Over 900 cycles, budget $139–$199 for a battery swap eventually. And every Mac we sell is backed by our own 1-year whole-machine warranty.

What kills MacBooks early?

The five most common causes of early MacBook death: (1) liquid damage — a single spill can corrode the logic board; (2) dropped and cracked — a cracked screen left unrepaired traps moisture; (3) overheating Intel models — sustained load without repasting after year 5 degrades performance; (4) failing to back up when the SSD shows early errors; (5) using the Mac until it is out of macOS security updates while connected to the internet. Use a case, back up to Time Machine or an external drive, and you will likely outlast the "average" lifespan by years.

Is the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro more durable?

The MacBook Air is arguably more durable in one key way: it is fanless. No fan means no mechanical part to fail, no dust accumulation, and no thermal paste to dry out. The MacBook Pro runs hotter under sustained load but has active cooling that lets it maintain performance longer in demanding tasks. For everyday use and longevity, the Air's fanless design is a durability advantage.

How do I check how long my MacBook has left?

Hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information → Power → check "Cycle Count". Under 400 = great shape. 400–700 = normal. Over 900 = consider a battery swap. For software life, look up your exact model at apple.com/macos — any model still on the supported list has at least one more year of updates. If your model was dropped from the latest macOS, you are in the final years of support.

Does buying a refurbished MacBook void the warranty?

Buying refurbished from a third-party (like us) is not the same as Apple Certified Refurbished — you do not get AppleCare eligibility. What you do get is our 1-year Luxury Certified whole-machine warranty: if anything fails in year one, we replace the machine rather than sending it out for weeks. After year one, Apple repair is available at any Apple Store or authorized service provider regardless of where you bought the Mac.

Our longest-lasting picks right now

Apple Silicon Macs bought today will comfortably run macOS through 2031+. These are the models we'd buy if longevity is the priority.
