How Many Charge Cycles Is Too Many on a Used MacBook?

Apple rates most MacBook batteries for 1,000 full charge cycles before capacity drops below 80%. Under 400 cycles is essentially like-new; 400–700 is normal healthy wear; 700–1000 is fine but watch it; over 1,000 means plan on a $139–$199 battery replacement eventually.

How to check cycle count

Hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then Power. "Cycle Count" is listed there. One cycle equals one full 0–100% discharge (two half-discharges count as one cycle). Always ask a used seller for this number — a screenshot takes them ten seconds.

What cycle count actually tells you

Cycle count is the single best proxy for battery wear, but pair it with "Condition" (Normal vs Service Recommended) and battery health percentage. A 1,200-cycle battery still at 85% is fine; a 600-cycle battery flagged "Service Recommended" is not. Our Luxury Certified Macs require 80%+ health at sale.

Battery replacement resets the clock

Even a high-cycle Mac is worth buying if the price reflects a future battery swap. A replacement ($139–$199 third-party, soldered on Apple Silicon so it needs a shop) effectively gives you a new battery and years more life. Factor it into your offer.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1000 charge cycles bad on a MacBook? +

Not necessarily — 1,000 cycles is Apple's rated threshold for dropping below 80% capacity, not a failure point. Many batteries run well past it. If health is still 80%+ and condition reads Normal, it is fine.

What is a good cycle count for a used MacBook? +

Under 400 is excellent (like-new). 400–700 is normal and healthy. The lower the better, but condition and health percentage matter just as much as the raw number.

Can you replace a MacBook battery yourself? +

On Apple Silicon Macs the battery is glued and best left to a shop — $139–$199 typically. We do battery replacements in-house in Marion. Call (740) 223-5530.
