How to Tell If a Used MacBook Has Water Damage
Look for corrosion or white residue around the ports and speaker grilles, sticky or unresponsive keys, discoloration or spots under the screen, a battery that drains abnormally fast, and intermittent shutdowns. Any of these signal past liquid exposure — even if the Mac currently powers on fine.
The visual inspection
Shine a light into the USB-C ports and speaker holes — green/white crusty residue or discoloration is corrosion, the classic liquid-damage fingerprint. Check the keyboard for stuck, mushy, or dead keys. Look under the display for cloudy spots, blooming, or discoloration that wasn't there from the factory.
The behavior tests
Liquid damage often hides until you stress the machine. Watch for: battery that drops 20%+ in an hour of light use, random shutdowns or reboots, a trackpad that clicks erratically, ports that work intermittently, or fans running hard at idle. These point to corrosion working on the logic board.
Why it matters even if it boots
A liquid-damaged Mac can run fine for weeks then fail as corrosion spreads. That's why buying "as-is" used is risky and why a tested, warrantied refurb is safer — we check for liquid history specifically and won't certify a Mac that shows it. If you have a water-damaged Mac to sell, we still buy it for parts: (740) 223-5530.
Frequently asked questions
Can water damage be hidden on a MacBook? +
Yes — a liquid-damaged Mac can boot and seem fine while corrosion quietly spreads. That's why a careful physical inspection and a warranty matter when buying used.
Does Apple's liquid indicator show water damage? +
Macs have internal Liquid Contact Indicators that turn red/pink when wet, but they require disassembly to see. External signs (port corrosion, sticky keys) are what a buyer can check.
Will you buy a water-damaged MacBook? +
Yes — we buy liquid-damaged Macs for their recoverable parts. Even one that won't boot is rarely worth zero. Text a photo to (740) 223-5530 for a quote.
