Is a 2020 MacBook Air (M1) Still Good in 2026?
Yes. In 2026 the 2020 MacBook Air M1 still runs the current macOS, handles web, office, video calls, and light creative work without lag, and has roughly 2–4 years of software support remaining. At refurbished prices from $569.99, it is the best value Apple laptop you can buy.
What the M1 still does well in 2026
The M1 chip is genuinely fast for everyday tasks — it outpaces many newer Windows laptops in real-world responsiveness. Web browsing with dozens of tabs, Google Docs and Office, Zoom and Teams calls, photo editing, 1080p and 4K video playback, and light Final Cut or Logic projects all run smoothly. For 90% of people, the M1 Air does not feel slow at all.
Where it shows its age
Heavy 4K/multicam video editing, large Xcode builds, or running many pro apps at once will push the 8GB base model. If that is you, step up to 16GB or a MacBook Pro. The M1 Air is also fanless — sustained heavy load will throttle it (gracefully) where a Pro would not.
How long will it keep getting updates?
Apple typically supports a Mac for 7–8 years of macOS releases. The M1 Air launched in late 2020, so expect macOS updates through roughly 2027–2028, and security patches a bit beyond. Buying a refurbished one in 2026 still leaves you years of supported life.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy an M1 or M2 MacBook Air in 2026? +
Buy the M1 if budget is the priority — it does everything most people need for $150+ less. Buy the M2 if you want the bigger screen, MagSafe, and a longer support runway. Both are excellent refurbished.
Is 8GB enough on an M1 MacBook Air in 2026? +
For web, office, streaming, and light creative work, yes — macOS manages 8GB of unified memory very efficiently on Apple Silicon. For heavy multitasking or pro media work, choose 16GB.
How much is a refurbished M1 MacBook Air in 2026? +
Luxury Certified M1 Airs start around $569.99 with a 1-year warranty — versus $1,250 new for the current Air. Same everyday experience, hundreds less.
