Is an Intel MacBook Still Worth Buying in 2026?
In 2026, usually not. Intel MacBooks are at or near the end of their macOS support runway, run hotter, last less on battery, and are far slower than Apple Silicon. A refurbished M1 MacBook Air from $569.99 outperforms them on every axis and has years more support. Only consider Intel if you need specific legacy x86 software.
Why Intel Macs have aged out
Apple moved to its own silicon in 2020. Intel Macs get progressively fewer macOS updates each year and will stop getting them soon. They also run hotter, throttle harder, and get hours less battery life than an M1. Buying one in 2026 means buying into a short, declining runway.
The M1 is cheaper AND better
Here's the kicker: a refurbished M1 MacBook Air ($569.99+) is often the same price as a used Intel Mac — and it's faster, cooler, quieter (fanless), lasts far longer on battery, and has years more software support. There's rarely a price argument for Intel anymore.
The narrow exceptions
A few people genuinely need Intel: certain legacy x86-only apps, Boot Camp Windows (Apple Silicon can't run x86 Windows natively), or specific pro plugins not yet ported. If that's you, an Intel Mac makes sense. For everyone else, go M1 or newer. Not sure? Call (740) 223-5530.
Frequently asked questions
How long will Intel Macs be supported? +
Apple typically supports Macs for 7–8 years of macOS releases. Most Intel Macs are at the tail of that window, so support is ending soon — a key reason to choose Apple Silicon.
Is an M1 Mac better than an Intel Mac? +
Yes, dramatically — faster, cooler, quieter, far better battery life, and years more support, often at the same refurbished price. The M1 wins on nearly every axis.
Why would anyone still buy an Intel Mac? +
Only for legacy x86-only software, native Boot Camp Windows, or specific un-ported pro plugins. For general use, a refurbished Apple Silicon Mac is the better buy.
