Is It Cheaper to Fix or Replace a MacBook?

The rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than half the price of an equivalent refurbished MacBook, replace it. Battery swaps ($139–$199) and screen fixes are usually worth it on a machine you like. Logic-board failures ($400–$700) on an older Mac usually aren't — a refurbished M1 Air from $569.99 makes more sense.

When to fix

Fix when the problem is cheap relative to the machine: a battery at $139–$199, a keyboard, a charging port, a cracked screen on a newer Mac you otherwise love. If the Mac is M1 or later and the fix is under half a replacement's cost, repair is the smart call.

When to replace

Replace when the repair is a logic board ($400–$700) on an aging Mac, when an Intel model is the patient (its software runway is short), or when multiple things are failing at once. At that point a refurbished M1/M2 — newer, faster, warrantied — beats sinking money into the old one.

The trade-in angle

Even a "not worth fixing" Mac has value. We buy broken Macs off the working-parts value and credit it toward a refurbished replacement — so you're not choosing between a repair bill and eating the loss. Text (740) 223-5530 with the model and the fault for both numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth replacing a MacBook battery? +

Usually yes — at $139–$199 a battery swap is cheap relative to the machine and gives years more life, as long as the rest of the Mac is healthy and M1 or newer.

When is a MacBook not worth repairing? +

When the fix is a logic board ($400–$700) on an older or Intel Mac, or when several parts are failing. At that point a refurbished replacement is the better spend.

Can I trade in a broken MacBook toward a working one? +

Yes — we credit the working-parts value of your broken Mac toward a refurbished replacement, so you don't eat the full loss. Text a photo to (740) 223-5530.
