Refurbished MacBook Air vs a New Chromebook for School
For school, a refurbished M1 MacBook Air (from $569.99) beats a new Chromebook for most students. It runs full desktop apps (Office, Adobe, coding tools), lasts 7+ years, and holds resale value — where a $300 Chromebook is web-only and disposable. The Mac costs more upfront but more than pays back over four years.
Where the Chromebook wins
Chromebooks are cheaper upfront ($200–$350), boot instantly, and are fine if all the schoolwork lives in Google Docs and a browser. For a young kid or a strictly cloud-based curriculum, a Chromebook is genuinely enough — and losing or breaking a cheap one hurts less.
Where the refurbished Air wins
Real desktop software (full Microsoft Office, Adobe, Xcode, Logic, statistics packages), offline capability, a vastly better keyboard and screen, 7+ years of useful life, and resale value at graduation. For high school and college, the Mac is the tool that won't need replacing mid-degree.
The four-year math
A $300 Chromebook often needs replacing in 2–3 years and resells for almost nothing. A $569.99 refurbished M1 Air lasts the whole degree and resells for $250–$350 after. Over four years the "expensive" Mac is frequently the cheaper choice.
