FaceTime not working on your Mac? Nine times out of ten it is not the camera at all — it is a sign-in, date-and-time, or network problem on FaceTime's side. Work through these fixes in order, fastest first. Most Macs are back on a call inside ten minutes.
First: is it FaceTime, or is it the camera?
Open Photo Booth. If you see yourself, your camera hardware is fine and the problem lives in FaceTime itself — keep reading. If Photo Booth shows a black screen or "no camera available," the issue is upstream of FaceTime: follow our MacBook camera not working guide first. If people can see you but not hear you, it is a mic problem — that is covered in the MacBook microphone guide.
The 8 fixes, fastest first
1. Check Apple's System Status page
Go to Apple's System Status page (search "Apple System Status") and look for FaceTime. If the dot next to FaceTime is anything but green, the outage is on Apple's end. Nothing on your Mac will fix it — wait it out.
2. Toggle FaceTime off and on
Open the FaceTime app, then in the menu bar choose FaceTime > Settings (or Preferences on older macOS). Untick "Enable this account," wait ten seconds, and tick it again. This re-registers your Mac with Apple's servers and clears the majority of "FaceTime not working" complaints, including calls that never ring.
3. Fix your date and time
FaceTime authenticates with Apple using your Mac's clock. If it is off by even a few minutes, activation silently fails. Go to System Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on "Set time and date automatically." This is the classic fix for the endless "Waiting for activation" message.
4. Sign out of your Apple ID in FaceTime, then back in
In FaceTime > Settings, click Sign Out. Quit FaceTime, reopen it, and sign back in with your Apple ID. If your password was recently changed on another device, the Mac can hold a stale token that blocks calls without showing any error.
5. Check the phone numbers and emails you are reachable at
Still in FaceTime > Settings, look at the "You can be reached at" list. If the address or number the other person is dialing is not ticked here, their call never reaches your Mac — it may ring on your iPhone but not your MacBook. Tick every address you want to answer on.
6. Restart, then update macOS
Restart the Mac first — it clears wedged FaceTime daemons. Then check System Settings > General > Software Update. Apple ties FaceTime features (and occasionally the whole service) to OS versions, and very old macOS releases lose FaceTime compatibility over time.
7. Rule out your network
FaceTime needs a clean connection to Apple's servers. Turn off any VPN, try a different Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot, and if you are on a work or school network ask whether the firewall blocks Apple services — corporate networks commonly do. If FaceTime works on the hotspot, the network is your culprit, not the Mac.
8. Screen sharing and SharePlay quirks
If calls work but screen sharing or SharePlay does not, both Macs need a reasonably recent macOS, and SharePlay must be enabled in FaceTime > Settings on both ends. One side running a much older OS is the usual cause.
The honest part: when it is actually hardware
If Photo Booth also fails, or the camera works but shows green tints, lines, or a dead black image everywhere, the camera module or its cable has failed — FaceTime settings will not bring it back. On modern MacBooks that is a display-assembly-level repair, and on older machines the repair quote often lands near the value of the whole computer.
That is the point where the math matters. Instead of paying for a repair on an aging Mac, you can get a real trade-in quote for a broken MacBook and put the value toward a tested refurbished machine — our Apple clearance lineup is where the best price-to-spec deals live.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does FaceTime say "Waiting for activation"?
Almost always a clock or sign-in issue. Set date and time to automatic (fix 3), then sign out and back in (fix 4). If it persists for more than a day, check Apple's System Status page.
Why does FaceTime work on my iPhone but not my Mac?
Usually the reachable-at list (fix 5): the address being called is enabled on the iPhone but not ticked on the Mac. Second most common: the Mac is signed into a different Apple ID than the phone.
Why is my camera black only in FaceTime?
Another app is holding the camera. Quit Zoom, Teams, and your browser, then reopen FaceTime. If the camera is black in every app, start with the camera troubleshooting guide.
Can I use FaceTime on an old MacBook?
FaceTime itself runs on very old machines, but group calls and newer features require recent macOS versions. If your Mac is stuck on an unsupported macOS, that is often the week it makes sense to move to a newer refurbished machine rather than fight software limits.
Does a broken camera ruin my Mac's trade-in value?
No — a Mac with a dead camera still has real value. See what it is worth on our broken MacBook trade-in page.
