How to Change Your Apple ID Email Address on a Mac (2026)

Your Apple ID email is the address you use to sign in to iCloud, the App Store, iMessage, and every Apple service. If you are switching email providers, lost access to an old account, or just want a cleaner address, you can change it directly from your Mac in a few minutes. Here is exactly how, plus what changes (and what does not) after you do it.

Before you start: two kinds of Apple ID email

What you can change depends on which kind of address your Apple ID uses:

  • A third-party address (like a Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo address) that you set as your Apple ID. This is the easy case — you can switch it to a different third-party address.
  • An @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com address. Apple does not let you change this to a different email — that address is permanently your Apple ID. You can, however, add an @icloud.com alias for receiving mail, and you can still reach your account through a trusted phone number.

To check which you have, open System Settings and click your name at the top. The address shown under your name is your current Apple ID.

How to change your Apple ID email on a Mac

These steps work on macOS Ventura, Sonoma, and Sequoia. Make sure you can receive mail at the new address first — Apple sends a verification code to it.

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner, then choose System Settings.
  2. Click your name at the very top of the sidebar to open your Apple ID settings.
  3. Select Sign-In & Security (older macOS calls this Name, Phone, Email).
  4. Next to your Apple ID email, click Change Apple ID or Edit.
  5. Enter the new email address you want to use, then click Continue.
  6. Apple emails a verification code to the new address. Open that inbox, copy the code, and type it in to confirm.

Once verified, the new address is your Apple ID immediately. You will use it to sign in from now on.

If the change option is greyed out

If you cannot edit the address, one of these is usually the reason:

  • Your Apple ID is an @icloud.com address. As noted above, that cannot be changed. If you want a different primary email, you would need to create a new Apple ID — but that means losing access to purchases and iCloud data tied to the old one, so most people keep the @icloud.com address and simply add an alias.
  • The new address is already in use. An email can only be attached to one Apple ID at a time. If you used it as an alias or a rescue email on another account, remove it there first.
  • You are not signed in on the Mac, or two-factor authentication needs to verify. Confirm you are signed in and that your trusted devices are reachable.

If two-factor authentication is tripping you up, our guide on setting up two-factor authentication for your Apple ID walks through trusted devices and phone numbers.

What happens to your stuff after you change it

Changing your Apple ID email does not create a new account — it is the same Apple ID with a new sign-in address. So:

  • Purchases, apps, music, and subscriptions stay put. Nothing is lost.
  • iCloud photos, files, and backups are untouched. Same account, same data.
  • You will need to sign in again on your other devices (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV) with the new address. Watch for sign-in prompts on each.
  • iMessage and FaceTime may need the new address re-verified in their settings.

Common questions

Will changing my Apple ID email log me out of everything?

You will be prompted to sign in again with the new address on your other Apple devices, but your data and purchases remain on the same account. It is a re-sign-in, not a reset.

Can I change an @icloud.com Apple ID to a Gmail address?

No. Once your Apple ID is an @icloud.com (or @me.com / @mac.com) address, Apple keeps it permanently. You can add an @icloud.com alias for receiving mail, but the primary Apple ID address will not change.

Do I need my old email to still work?

Not for the change itself — verification goes to the new address. But if you lose access to your account later, having a working recovery contact and trusted phone number makes recovery far easier, so update those too.

I am buying a used Mac. Should the old owner change their Apple ID first?

The old owner should fully sign out of their Apple ID and remove the Mac from Find My before handing it over — changing their email is not enough. A clean sign-out is what lets you set up the Mac with your own account.
