How to Mute a Tab in Safari on a Mac (2026): Silence a Noisy Tab and Find What’s Playing

A tab starts blasting an autoplay video or ad, and you have twenty tabs open. Here is the fast way to silence it in one click — plus how to find which tab is the culprit and how to mute everything at once.

The one-click fix: the speaker button in the address bar

When any Safari tab is playing sound, a small speaker icon appears on the right side of the address bar (the Smart Search field) and on the tab itself.

  1. Look at the address bar of the tab you are viewing. If sound is playing, you will see a blue speaker icon near the right edge.
  2. Click the speaker icon once to mute that tab. Click it again to unmute.
  3. You can also click the speaker icon directly on the tab in the tab bar — handy when the noisy tab is not the one you are looking at.

Muting a tab this way does not stop the video or audio — it keeps playing silently — so a paused podcast stays where it was.

How to find which tab is playing audio

If you cannot tell which of your open tabs is making noise, the speaker icon is your map. Every tab currently playing sound shows a speaker icon on the tab. Scan the tab bar for the icon, or use the shortcut below to silence all of them at once and reintroduce sound one tab at a time.

Using Tab Groups to keep media-heavy sites in their own group also makes a rogue autoplay far easier to track down.

Mute every tab at once (mute all)

To silence the whole window instead of hunting one tab:

  • Right-click (or Control-click) the speaker icon in the address bar and choose Mute All Tabs. Every tab in that window goes silent.
  • Or Option-click the speaker icon to mute all tabs except the one you clicked — perfect when you want to keep one video and kill the rest.
  • You can also open the Window menu and choose Mute Tab or Mute Other Tabs.

Per-site: stop autoplay so nothing starts in the first place

Muting is a reaction. To stop noisy tabs before they start, set a site to never autoplay:

  1. Open the site, then go to Safari > Settings for This Website (or Safari > Settings > Websites > Auto-Play).
  2. Set Auto-Play to Never Auto-Play or Stop Media with Sound.

Pair that with pop-up blocking and Reader mode for a much quieter browsing experience.

Still hearing sound after muting? Check the hardware

If a tab is muted but you still hear crackle or distortion — or sound comes through when everything should be silent — the problem may be the speakers, not the tab. Our guide on MacBook speakers crackling walks through isolating a software glitch from a blown speaker.

If your Mac is old enough that Safari is stuttering on every media-heavy page, it may be time for a faster machine. An Apple-silicon MacBook Air handles dozens of tabs without breaking a sweat — refurbished M1 Airs start at $569.99 and M2 Airs at $974.99 in our Apple clearance lineup, each covered by our own warranty.
