MacBook Pro Size Guide · 2026
Choosing between the 13-inch and 15-inch Air is a $100 decision. Choosing between the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro is not — at LuxuriousComputers the 14-inch starts at $879 and the only 16-inch in stock is the top-of-the-line M2 Max at $2,399. Both sizes share the same 120Hz Liquid Retina XDR screen technology, the same ports, and the same keyboard. Here is who actually needs the big one, and why most people are better served by a 14-inch and change to spare.
Quick answer
Buy a 14-inch unless you know exactly why you need the 16. The 14-inch models cover everything from serious student work to professional video editing at $879 to $1,399. Buy the 16-inch M2 Max if your work is GPU-heavy and mobile — color grading, 3D, large exports away from a desk — and the biggest screen Apple puts in a laptop earns its keep every day.

Every 14-inch we stock
- 14″ M1 Pro (2021) — $879. 16GB and 512GB. Still a genuinely fast editing and development machine; the best price-to-power ratio in the store.
- 14″ M2 Pro (2023) — $1,099. 16GB and 512GB. The sweet spot for photographers, developers, and video editors who want current-generation speed.
- 14″ M3 Pro (2023) — $1,399. 18GB and 512GB. The newest chip we carry in this size — we covered it in depth in our 14-inch M3 review.
Who should buy the 14-inch (from $879)
- Anyone who carries the laptop daily. At 3.4 to 3.5 lb it is a full pound and a quarter lighter than the 16 — the difference between forgetting it is in the bag and feeling it by lunchtime.
- Desk workers with a monitor. If the Mac spends its day driving an external display, the built-in screen size barely matters — put the savings toward the monitor. This is the same logic as our Air size guide, with higher stakes.
- Most video and photo editors. The 14-inch M2 Pro handles 4K timelines and large Lightroom catalogs comfortably — see our video editing guide for the full breakdown.
Who should buy the 16-inch ($2,399)
- GPU-heavy professionals. The M2 Max carries roughly twice the graphics power of the M2 Pro. If your day is color grading, 3D rendering, motion graphics, or machine learning, the Max pays for itself in export time.
- People whose only screen is the laptop. Two extra diagonal inches at the same 120Hz XDR quality is a real workspace upgrade when there is no desk monitor in your life — on set, on site, on the road.
- Buyers who want one machine for five-plus years. 1TB of storage and the biggest battery in the lineup leave the most headroom of anything we sell.
The honest math: 16-inch vs 14-inch plus a monitor
The gap between the 14″ M2 Pro at $1,099 and the 16″ M2 Max at $2,399 is $1,300. That buys a very good 27-inch 4K monitor, a dock, and a mechanical keyboard — with hundreds left over. Unless you specifically need M2 Max graphics or the big screen away from a desk, the 14-inch-plus-monitor setup gives you far more total screen for the money. Pay the $1,300 for the GPU and the portability of the screen, not for status.
FAQ
Do both sizes have the same ports?
Yes — HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe 3, three Thunderbolt ports, and a headphone jack on both. Neither needs a dongle for a monitor, camera card, or hard drive.
Is the 16-inch faster?
Only because of the chip inside it, not the size. Our 16-inch happens to carry the M2 Max, which is a large GPU step up from the M2 Pro. CPU-side, day-to-day work feels nearly identical between them.
Can I add RAM or storage later?
No. Apple silicon Macs have memory and storage soldered to the board, so buy the config you will still be happy with in year four.
What about trade-ins?
Either size qualifies. Send us your old Mac — even broken — and we will put its value toward the new one. Start with the trade-in guide.
