Start with the task that is slow: opening applications, browsing, signing in, or working with a particular file. A slow computer does not automatically need replacement, and one slow application does not establish a storage failure.
Check storage and application load
- Save your work, restart, and try the affected task before reopening every application.
- Check System Settings → General → Storage for available space and storage recommendations. Review files before deleting them and keep a backup of important work.
- Use Activity Monitor to inspect application activity and memory use while the slowdown happens. Record which application is involved rather than quitting unfamiliar system processes.
- Close applications you do not need, then repeat the same task. Check the affected application’s published system requirements and compatibility with your Mac.
Apple identifies limited free space, memory demand and incompatible applications as possible causes. These checks help decide what to investigate; they do not establish that a component is defective.
Separate the computer from the connection
If local applications are responsive but a web-based business tool is slow, compare the same task on another authorized device or connection. Record whether the issue is limited to that service. Avoid using private customer data in a test account or sharing it in a support request.
Repair or replace based on the job
Before buying memory or a drive, confirm whether that component is replaceable on the exact model. Do not assume an older MacBook contains a spinning hard drive or supports a straightforward memory upgrade.
Compare an actual diagnostic or repair quote with a replacement that supports the business applications, peripherals and operating-system requirements you use. Include setup and data-transfer needs. A newer processor name alone does not establish the best decision for your work.
When to ask for help
Send the model, macOS version, available storage and a short description of the slow task, including when it began. For a business computer, record which task is interrupted and whether another device can keep that task running. Avoid sharing passwords or private customer files in an initial message.
For local help, see computer repair in Marion, Ohio or contact LC at (740) 223-5530. Describe the symptoms and ask whether the model and job fit LC’s service scope before arranging work.
