MacBook Screen Flickering? Every Fix, In Order (2026 Guide)

A flickering MacBook screen is one of the more unnerving Mac problems because the same symptom — shimmering, strobing, horizontal tearing, or brief black flashes — can be caused by a five-second software glitch or a failing display cable. The good news: most flickering is software, and you can rule that out in about twenty minutes. This guide walks through every fix in order, cheapest first, then tells you honestly when it’s time to stop fixing and start replacing.

First: figure out if it’s the screen or the Mac

Before anything else, connect your MacBook to an external monitor or TV (any HDMI or USB-C display works). This one test cuts the problem in half:

  • External display is ALSO flickering — the problem is the graphics processor or macOS itself. Software fixes below have a good chance of working.
  • External display is perfectly stable — the problem is the built-in panel or the display cable. Software may still help (especially refresh-rate settings), but hardware is the likely culprit.

No external monitor handy? Take a screenshot (Shift-Cmd-3) while the screen is misbehaving. If the flicker or artifacts appear in the screenshot, it’s the GPU/software. If the screenshot looks clean, it’s the physical panel or cable.

The software fixes, in order

1. Restart properly

Not sleep-and-wake — a full Apple menu → Restart. A surprising amount of flicker is a stuck graphics driver state that a reboot clears completely. If the flicker is gone for days afterward, you’re done.

2. Update macOS

System Settings → General → Software Update. Apple ships display-driver fixes constantly, and several past macOS point releases specifically fixed flickering on certain models. If you’re more than one version behind, update before trying anything else.

3. Turn off True Tone and automatic brightness

System Settings → Displays: toggle off True Tone and Automatically adjust brightness. Both features change the panel’s output on the fly, and on some machines the constant adjustment reads as shimmer or pulsing, especially in dim rooms.

4. Check the refresh rate (ProMotion MacBook Pros)

On 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with ProMotion, System Settings → Displays lets you pick a refresh rate. If flicker shows up mostly in certain apps or while scrolling, set it to a fixed 60Hz as a test. If that stops it, the variable refresh rate was interacting badly with an app — report it, and update that app.

5. Disable automatic graphics switching (Intel MacBook Pros)

Intel MacBook Pros with two graphics processors switch between them to save battery, and a flaky switchover is a classic flicker source. System Settings (or System Preferences) → Battery → uncheck Automatic graphics switching. If the flicker stops, the discrete GPU or the switching circuit is the issue.

6. Boot into Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads macOS with the bare minimum. On Apple Silicon: shut down, hold the power button until Options appears, select your disk, hold Shift and choose Safe Mode. On Intel: restart holding Shift. If the screen is rock-solid in Safe Mode, some login item, driver, or cache in your normal session is responsible — remove recent apps and login items one at a time.

7. Reset NVRAM and SMC (Intel Macs only)

These stores hold display and power settings that can corrupt. NVRAM: restart holding Option-Cmd-P-R for about 20 seconds. SMC: shut down, hold Shift-Ctrl-Option plus the power button for 10 seconds, release, power on. Apple Silicon Macs don’t need this — a normal shutdown-and-restart does the equivalent.

8. Reinstall macOS

The last software resort. Reinstalling from macOS Recovery (it keeps your files, but back up first anyway) replaces every system file and driver. If flickering survives a clean reinstall, you have your answer: it’s hardware.

The hardware causes

Symptom Likely cause Outlook
Flicker only at certain lid angles Worn display cable (the 2016–2019 “flexgate” era is notorious) Repairable — cable or display assembly
Flicker plus colored vertical lines Panel or cable failure See our lines on screen page — usually a display replacement
Flicker on external displays too, artifacts in screenshots GPU / logic board Expensive — often not worth repairing
Started after a spill or drop Liquid or impact damage to cable/board Get a quote before spending anything

If the lid-angle clue fits, try this test: open the lid very slowly from closed. If the screen flickers or blacks out in a specific range of angles and stabilizes past it, that’s the display cable wearing through — a well-understood, fixable fault.

Repair or replace? Do the math

Screen and display-assembly repairs are among the priciest MacBook fixes — our screen replacement cost guide breaks down real numbers by model. The short version: on a MacBook that’s six or more years old, the repair often costs more than the machine is worth.

That’s when the smarter move is to sell the flickering MacBook as-is — we buy broken-screen and bad-display Macs, flicker included, and put that money toward a working replacement. A refurbished MacBook Air M1 at $569.99 or M2 Air at $974.99 from our Apple clearance collection frequently costs less than an out-of-warranty display repair on an older Pro — and you get a newer, faster machine with a warranty instead of a patched old one.

FAQ

Why does my MacBook screen flicker only sometimes?

Intermittent flicker points to either a feature that adjusts the display dynamically (True Tone, auto-brightness, graphics switching — fixes 3–5 above) or a physical cable fault that only misbehaves at certain lid angles or temperatures. Constant flicker leans harder toward panel or GPU.

Can a flickering screen get worse?

If it’s a cable or panel fault, yes — these degrade with every open-close cycle, often ending in a black screen or permanent lines. If you’re going to sell it, sooner beats later: a flickering-but-visible display is worth more than a dead one.

Does Apple fix screen flickering for free?

Only under warranty, AppleCare+, or an active service program covering your specific model and fault. Out of warranty, you’ll pay full display-repair pricing — get the quote, then compare it against the machine’s real value before saying yes.

Will my files be safe if the screen dies completely?

Yes — the storage is unaffected by display faults. You can connect an external monitor to get your data off, and a Mac with a dead screen still has trade-in value.
