Making the jump from a Windows PC to a Mac feels bigger than it is. The truth: most switchers are comfortable within a week, and the things that feel "wrong" on day one are usually just a different keyboard shortcut or a button in a new corner. This guide walks you through the five things that trip up every Windows switcher, how to move your files over, and which refurbished Mac makes the cheapest, safest first Mac.
1. The keyboard: Ctrl becomes Cmd
Nearly every shortcut you already know still exists on a Mac. You just press the Cmd (⌘) key instead of Ctrl. It sits right next to the spacebar, which most switchers find easier on the thumb after a day or two.

Two quirks worth knowing up front: the Mac Delete key works like Backspace (it deletes to the left). To delete forward like the Windows Delete key, press Fn + Delete. And instead of Home / End, use Cmd + Left Arrow / Cmd + Right Arrow to jump to the start or end of a line.
2. Yes, right-click exists
The number one myth. On a MacBook trackpad, tap with two fingers and the right-click menu appears. You can also click the bottom-right corner if you prefer. Any USB or Bluetooth mouse from your PC works too, right button included. Prefer the keyboard? Hold the Control key while you click — Ctrl-click opens the same right-click menu anywhere in macOS. If two-finger tap is not on by default, turn it on in System Settings > Trackpad > Secondary Click. Takes ten seconds.
3. Finder is your File Explorer (and there is no C: drive)
The smiling blue face in the Dock is Finder, the Mac version of File Explorer. Your stuff lives in the same kinds of places: Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Pictures. There is no C: drive to think about; the Mac just shows you your folders.
The habit that will save you the most time: Spotlight. Press Cmd + Space, type the first few letters of any app, file, or setting, and hit Enter. Most Mac users launch everything this way and never dig through folders at all.
Installing software is simpler than Windows: drag the app into the Applications folder (or install from the App Store). Uninstalling is usually just dragging the app to the Trash. No registry, no leftover installer debris.
4. Window buttons are on the left (and closing is not quitting)
The red, yellow, and green dots live in the top-left corner. Red closes the window, yellow minimizes to the Dock, and green takes the app full screen (hold it for split-screen options). One real difference from Windows: closing a window does not quit the app. The app keeps running in the Dock (you will see a dot under its icon). To fully quit, press Cmd + Q. Leaving apps running is normal on a Mac and costs almost nothing, so most people stop worrying about it within a week.
5. Moving your files over
Three easy routes, pick one:
- Windows Migration Assistant (free from Apple). Install it on your PC, put both machines on the same Wi-Fi, and it copies your documents, photos, and even browser bookmarks straight into your new Mac account during setup.
- Cloud drive. If your files already live in OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox, just install that same app on the Mac and sign in. Done.
- External USB drive. Format it as exFAT and both Windows and macOS can read and write it. Copy on the PC, paste on the Mac.
