Time Machine Backup Failed or Stuck? Checks Before Starting Over

If Time Machine stops working, preserve the existing backup while you investigate. Write down the exact error and the date of the last successful backup before deleting files, resetting settings or erasing a disk.

Check the destination and connection

  1. Confirm the selected backup disk is connected, available and unlocked if encryption requires it.
  2. For a directly attached disk, try connecting it to the Mac instead of through a hub. Check the disk manufacturer’s instructions and cable requirements.
  3. For a network destination, make sure the Mac and destination are on the appropriate network. Check the destination’s availability and any required credentials through an authorized administrator.
  4. Check capacity. Apple recommends a Time Machine disk with at least twice the storage capacity of the Mac. An existing backup needing more space may require a different destination rather than deletion of recovery history.

Allow for a first backup

The first backup can take longer than later backups. Apple also identifies cloud synchronization, VPN software and security software as possible factors to investigate. On a business-managed computer, coordinate changes with the administrator rather than disabling protection independently.

If Apple’s troubleshooting steps lead you to Disk Utility or the disk manufacturer’s support, record the result and stop if you are unsure whether the next operation could remove data. Do not treat a disk check as proof that all backups can be restored.

Do not erase your recovery options casually

This guide no longer recommends deleting an in-progress backup file or system preferences as a routine first step. Erasing the destination or beginning a new backup can affect access to earlier versions. Seek help first if those copies are your only route to important business records.

When to ask for help

Share the error text, destination type, available space and last successful backup date. Keep passwords and the backed-up files out of the initial inquiry. For a business computer, record which task is interrupted and whether another device can keep that task running. Avoid sharing passwords or private customer files in an initial message.
