Check whether only the Mac loses connection or other devices lose it at the same time. Also distinguish losing the Wi-Fi connection from remaining connected to Wi-Fi without internet access.
Start with a repeatable observation
Record the time, location, network and task when the problem occurs. If another authorized device is available, compare it on the same network. If the Mac works reliably on another permitted network, that is useful evidence for investigating the original connection; it does not by itself establish which device is defective.
Use the basic checks
- Save work and restart the Mac. Apple notes this can help renew its network connection.
- Check the Mac’s date and time. Install compatible macOS updates when you have a working connection and an appropriate backup.
- Check for VPN or security software that may affect connectivity. On a business-managed Mac, ask the administrator before disabling or changing security settings.
- If you control the router, check the manufacturer’s restart and firmware instructions. Agree a suitable time before interrupting a shared business network.
- Check whether the internet provider reports a service problem when several devices lose internet access.
Use Wireless Diagnostics
Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics can help analyze a Wi-Fi connection. Hold Option while clicking the Wi-Fi menu and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Follow its prompts. Apple says this tool does not change network settings. Diagnostic files can contain network details, so share them only through an agreed support channel.
Avoid guessing at hardware
Repeated disconnections do not prove a failed antenna or Wi-Fi chip. Do not delete system preference files or buy a generic USB Wi-Fi adapter as a universal fix. Compatibility and the underlying problem need to be established first.
When to ask for help
Send the model, macOS version, whether other devices are affected, and the locations or networks where the symptom repeats. For a business computer, record which task is interrupted and whether another device can keep that task running. Avoid sharing passwords or private customer files in an initial message.
For local help, see computer repair in Marion, Ohio or contact LC at (740) 223-5530. Describe the symptoms and ask whether the model and job fit LC’s service scope before arranging work.
