Apple's student discount takes about $100 off a new Mac. A refurbished MacBook takes $550 or more off the same job. Both are legitimate ways to save, but they are not the same size of saving, and the education discount comes with eligibility hoops. Here is the honest 2026 price math.
What the Apple education discount actually gets you in 2026
- About $100 off most Macs. Education pricing on the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac Mini usually runs about $100 below Apple's retail price, up to $200 on some higher-end models. As of July 2026, the education price for a new MacBook Air starts at $1,199.
- A Back to School gift card (July 16 to August 27, 2026). Verified students currently get a $100 Apple gift card with a new MacBook Air, or $150 with a MacBook Pro. Note that it is a gift card for future Apple purchases, not money off the laptop itself.
- Eligibility checks. The discount is for current and newly accepted college students, parents buying on their behalf, faculty, staff, and homeschool teachers. You typically verify with a school email or enrollment documents, and Apple limits how many discounted devices you can buy per year. High school students do not qualify on their own.
The real price math
Here is what the same decision looks like side by side, using the education price for a new MacBook Air and our live refurbished prices:
| Option | Price | vs. new Air at education price |
|---|---|---|
| New MacBook Air, education price | $1,199 | — |
| Same, counting the $100 gift card as cash back | ~$1,099 effective | — |
| MacBook Air M3 13″ (refurbished) | $849 | $350 less |
| MacBook Air M2 (refurbished) | $974.99 | $650 less |
| MacBook Air M1 (refurbished) | $569.99 | $749 less |
| MacBook Pro 14″ M1 Pro (refurbished) | $879 | $320 less, and it is a Pro |
Even after the education discount and the gift card, a new MacBook Air costs roughly twice what a refurbished M2 Air does. The $974.99 M2 Air runs the same macOS, the same apps, and handles the same coursework.
When the education discount is the right call
- You want the newest chip and the longest update runway. A brand-new Mac will get macOS updates the furthest into the future. If you plan to keep one laptop for eight or more years, newest-is-longest matters.
- You were going to buy new at full price anyway. Then the education discount is free money. If you are eligible, there is no reason to ever pay Apple's full retail price.
- You will actually use the gift card. If AirPods or an iPad are already on your list, the Back to School card effectively deepens the discount.
When refurbished wins
- The budget is real. The $650 you keep by choosing a refurbished M2 Air over a new education-priced Air covers a lot of textbooks, a monitor, or most of a semester's meal plan.
- College coursework does not need a new chip. Notes, browser research, Office, Canvas, Zoom, and even light photo or video editing run comfortably on an M1 or M2. Our college students guide breaks down which model fits which major.
- Campus is hard on laptops. Backpacks, dorm desks, and coffee happen. If a $569.99 to $974.99 machine gets damaged, replacing it hurts far less than replacing a $1,199 one.
- No paperwork. No enrollment verification, no school email, no purchase limits. The price on the page is the price for everyone.
Can you stack the student discount on a refurbished Mac?
No. Apple's education pricing only applies to new Macs bought through Apple's education store. But there is nothing to stack: our everyday refurbished prices are already hundreds of dollars below education pricing, with a warranty, free shipping on every order, and easy returns.
