August is the one month of the year when a laptop purchase has a hard deadline. Whether you have a freshman heading to campus or a high-schooler who finally needs more than a Chromebook, this guide covers the part the model-comparison articles skip: when to buy, what each budget actually gets you right now, and what to set up before the first day of class. If you want the deep model breakdowns, we link to them throughout.
When to buy: the back-to-school timeline
- Early-to-mid August (best): You have time for delivery, setup, and a return window before classes start. Every order at LuxuriousComputers ships free and typically arrives in 3 to 5 business days, so ordering even a week before move-in is safe — but earlier means less stress.
- Late August (fine, but order first, pack second): Have it shipped home rather than to a dorm mailroom that is processing a thousand packages during move-in week.
- "Should we wait for the September Apple event?" For students, almost never. New releases raise the ceiling, not the floor — the M1 and M2 MacBook Airs that handle four years of coursework do not get better in September, and the semester does not wait.
What each budget gets you right now
These are live prices on refurbished, warrantied Macs — not MSRPs.
| Budget | Pick | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $500 | MacBook Air M1 | $569.99 | Writing, research, browser-heavy coursework — the value king for most majors |
| Around $550 | MacBook Air M2 | $974.99 | Same all-day battery with a newer design, better webcam, and brighter screen |
| $850–$950 | MacBook Air M3 13″ / 15″ | $849 / $1,280 | Four-plus years of headroom; the 15″ is a great dorm-desk main screen |
| Under $900, heavier majors | MacBook Pro M1 Pro 14″ | $879 | Engineering, film, CS — Pro-level performance at an Air-level price |
| $1,000+ | MacBook Pro M2 Pro 14″ | $1,099 | Video editing, 3D, data-heavy STEM work through grad school |

Refurbished vs the education discount
Apple’s education pricing knocks roughly $100 off a new MacBook Air. A quality refurbished one costs hundreds less than that — a $569.99 M1 Air versus roughly $1,000 for the cheapest new Air even after the student discount. We break down the math in Apple student discount vs refurbished MacBook; for most students the refurb wins by a wide margin, and every Mac we sell is tested and covered by our warranty.
Before-the-first-day setup checklist
- Sign in with the student’s own Apple ID — not a parent’s. iCloud, iMessage, and app purchases should follow the student, and most colleges issue Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace for free once the school email is active.
- Turn on FileVault and iCloud backup for the Documents folder. A stolen or coffee-soaked laptop the night before a due date is survivable if the paper lives in the cloud.
- Install the school’s Wi-Fi profile and VPN before move-in. Campus IT pages explain eduroam setup; doing it on home Wi-Fi beats doing it in a dorm hallway.
- Buy a hardshell case and check the charger. Backpack life is rough on lids and corners.
- Set up Find My. Libraries and lecture halls are where laptops go missing.
Have an old laptop to hand down — or trade in?
If the student is upgrading, the old MacBook still has value even with a cracked screen or dead battery. See what it is worth in store credit on our trade-in page and put it toward the new one.
Back-to-school FAQ
How fast will it arrive?
All orders ship free — no minimum — and typically arrive in 3 to 5 business days after 1–2 days of processing. Order by mid-August and you are comfortably ahead of move-in.
Is a refurbished Mac risky for a student?
No. Every Mac we sell is fully tested, graded, and covered by our warranty. See Best refurbished Mac for students for how we grade them.
What is the single best value for most students?
The $569.99 MacBook Air M1. It handles notes, papers, research, and streaming for years, and the battery lasts a full day of classes. Step up to the $974.99 M2 Air if you want the newer design and webcam.
