How to Manage Apple ID Subscriptions & Payment on a Mac (2026)

Your Apple ID is the account behind every App Store download, iCloud+ plan, Apple TV+ trial, and third-party app subscription on your Mac. When a charge shows up that you did not expect — or you switch cards and payments start failing — the fix lives in System Settings, not on a website. Here is exactly how to find, cancel, and control every Apple ID subscription and payment method from your Mac.

Where subscriptions and payment live on a Mac

On macOS Ventura, Sonoma, and Sequoia, everything routes through System Settings > [your name] at the top (this is the Apple ID panel). From there you get two separate controls:

  • Media & PurchasesManage (or Subscriptions) — cancel or change recurring app and Apple service subscriptions.
  • Payment & Shipping — the card Apple charges for everything, plus your billing address.

On older macOS (Monterey and earlier) the panel is called Apple ID inside System Preferences, but the layout is nearly identical.

How to see and cancel your Apple ID subscriptions

  1. Open System Settings and click your name at the top of the sidebar.
  2. Click Media & Purchases, then Manage next to Subscriptions. (You may be asked to sign in.)
  3. You will see every active subscription — Apple services like iCloud+, Apple TV+, Apple Music, and any third-party app that bills through Apple (streaming apps, VPNs, games, note apps, and so on).
  4. Click a subscription to change its plan, or click Cancel Subscription to stop it. If there is no Cancel button, the subscription is already set not to renew.

Important: canceling stops the next charge — you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for. You do not get a partial refund just for canceling.

Do not see a Subscriptions option? You can also open the App Store app, click your name in the bottom-left corner, and choose Account SettingsManage under Subscriptions. Same list, different door.

How to change your Apple ID payment method

  1. In System Settings, click your name, then Payment & Shipping.
  2. Authenticate with your Mac password or Touch ID.
  3. Click the existing card to edit it, click Add Payment Method to add a new card, or use the Edit / minus button to remove one.
  4. Make sure the billing address matches the address on file with your bank — a mismatch is the #1 reason Apple payments get declined.

You can keep more than one payment method on file; Apple uses them in the order listed. Drag to reorder if you want a specific card charged first.

Fix "your account has a billing problem" or a declined payment

If Apple emails you or a banner says a subscription payment failed, the service is usually paused, not gone. Fix it in one pass:

  • Update the card in Payment & Shipping (expired, replaced, or wrong billing ZIP is the usual culprit).
  • Check for a balance owed — a failed charge can leave an unpaid amount that blocks new downloads until it clears.
  • Confirm the address matches your bank exactly, including apartment number.

Once a valid card is on file, Apple retries the charge automatically within a day or two and restores the subscription.

See your billing history and get a refund

To review what Apple actually charged you:

  1. Open the App Store, click your name, then Account Settings.
  2. Scroll to Purchase History and click See All to view dated charges by app and service.

To dispute a charge, go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the item, and choose Report a Problem. Apple grants refunds for accidental purchases, unused subscriptions, and duplicate charges more often than people expect — it costs nothing to ask.

Common questions

Why am I still being charged after I deleted the app?

Deleting an app does not cancel its subscription — the two are separate. You must cancel the subscription in Media & Purchases (steps above). This is the single most common source of surprise Apple charges.

Can I manage subscriptions for family members?

If you are the organizer of a Family Sharing group, you can view and cancel subscriptions your family members purchased through shared billing, right in the same Subscriptions list.

Does canceling iCloud+ delete my files?

Downgrading iCloud+ keeps your data, but if your storage use exceeds the free 5 GB tier, iCloud stops syncing new items and eventually flags files for removal. Free up space or export first before you downgrade.

I am buying a used Mac — will the old owner’s subscriptions follow it?

No. Subscriptions belong to the Apple ID, not the machine. Once you sign in with your own Apple ID, you see only your own subscriptions and payment methods. Just make sure the seller has fully signed out of theirs first.
