Short answer: a MacBook battery replacement costs about $159–$249 at Apple out of warranty, $139–$199 at a good independent shop, or $110–$130 in parts if you do it yourself. Whether it’s worth it depends on one question — is the battery fee less than half of what a better Mac costs? Here’s the full math, with real 2026 prices.
Battery replacement cost by model (out of warranty)
| Model | Apple (typical) | Independent shop | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13″ (M1 / M2 / M3) | ~$159 | $139–$179 | Cheapest swap in the lineup |
| MacBook Air 15″ | ~$199 | $149–$189 | Bigger cells, slightly higher fee |
| MacBook Pro 13″–16″ (2016 and newer) | ~$249 | $159–$199 | Flat-ish fee at Apple regardless of size |
Apple doesn’t publish one flat rate — the exact fee is confirmed by model through their estimate tool, and mail-in service can add shipping. Independent shops vary by city, but $139–$199 covers most quotes we see. Batteries in every modern MacBook are glued in, which is why even the “cheap” option isn’t $50.
When it’s free
If your Mac is still under the standard one-year warranty or AppleCare+, and the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity, Apple replaces it at no charge. Check your Maximum Capacity first — our battery health guide shows you where to look in 30 seconds, and what a good number actually is. Above 80%, Apple considers the wear normal and you’re paying the fee even under AppleCare+.
The half-the-value rule: replace the battery or the Mac?
Same rule we use for every MacBook repair decision: if the repair costs more than half of what a comparable refurbished Mac sells for, put the money toward the better machine instead. Batteries usually pass this test — but not always.
Worth it: Apple Silicon Macs
A $159 battery in an M1 MacBook Air that still does everything you need? Easy yes — the swap costs a third of the machine’s value and buys years more life. A $249 battery in a 14″ MacBook Pro M1 Pro ($879 refurbished)? Also clearly worth it.
Usually not worth it: Intel MacBooks
A 2015–2017 Intel MacBook is worth $100–$250 on a good day. Apple’s $249 battery fee can exceed the entire value of the laptop — and afterward you still own a Mac that’s losing macOS support. That $249 is more than half of a refurbished M1 MacBook Air at $569.99, which is faster, lighter, and starts its battery life from zero. This is the classic trade-up case.
What about DIY?
Genuine-part kits run about $110–$130 for most models. But MacBook batteries are glued to the top case, the job takes a couple of hours with heat and solvent, and a punctured lithium cell is a genuine fire hazard. If you’ve done laptop repairs before, it’s doable; if you haven’t, the $30–$70 you save over a shop isn’t worth the risk to a machine you rely on.
Can you keep using a Mac with a bad battery?
Usually, yes — a worn battery means shorter runtime and the occasional shutdown, and staying plugged in works fine. The one exception: a swollen battery. If the trackpad is stiff, the case is bulging, or the bottom doesn’t sit flat, stop charging it and get it serviced or sold — swelling only gets worse.
Bad battery? You have a third option
You don’t have to fix it to get value out of it. We buy MacBooks with worn and even swollen batteries — see what a MacBook with a bad battery is worth, or start a quote for any broken MacBook. Put that credit toward a refurbished Apple Silicon Mac — every one we sell ships free, with a warranty, from our current stock.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a MacBook battery replacement cost?
Out of warranty in 2026: roughly $159 for a 13″ MacBook Air, $199 for the 15″ Air, and $249 for MacBook Pro models at Apple. Independent shops typically charge $139–$199.
Is it worth replacing a MacBook battery?
On an Apple Silicon Mac, almost always — the fee is well under half the machine’s value. On an older Intel MacBook, usually not: the fee often exceeds half the cost of a refurbished M1 Air, which is the better buy.
Does AppleCare+ cover battery replacement?
Yes — free, but only if the battery holds less than 80% of original capacity. Above 80%, wear is considered normal and the standard fee applies.
Can I replace a MacBook battery myself?
Parts kits cost about $110–$130, but the battery is glued in and the job takes hours. Worth it only if you’re comfortable with laptop repair; otherwise a shop’s $139–$199 is money well spent.
Can I sell a MacBook with a bad battery?
Yes. A worn battery lowers the value but doesn’t zero it — we buy MacBooks with bad and swollen batteries and put the value toward a refurbished replacement.
