A $30 hub and a $300 Thunderbolt dock drive the exact same number of monitors on a base M1 or M2 MacBook — one — because the chip sets the ceiling, not the box. Two details decide more setups than everything else combined. First, wattage: an Air charges happily at 65–70W, a 14-inch Pro wants 90W+, a 16-inch Pro wants 96–100W — a dock that's under-spec makes the Mac slowly lose battery under load and gets blamed for being "broken." A good Thunderbolt dock outlives several laptops — but pairing one with a 2015–2019 Intel MacBook is spending dock money to accessorize a machine that stays slow at everything the dock plugs into. The dock can't fix thermal throttling, a fan that screams on video calls, or macOS updates that have already ended. If your dock budget and your Mac's trade-in value are about the same number, the better setup is almost always a newer Mac plus a cheaper dock.

Five-minute dock setup checklist
- Plug the dock into wall power first, then into the Mac. Bus-powered behavior on a powered dock usually means the power brick isn't seated.

Size, power, and permanence. A hub is a small bus-powered dongle ($20–$60) that adds HDMI, USB-A, and card slots for travel — it draws power from the Mac and often can't charge it. A docking station is a powered desk unit ($60–$300) that charges the MacBook, drives one or more monitors, and connects everything through a single cable. Why does my MacBook only show one monitor through my dock?
The chip, not the dock, sets the limit. Base M1 and M2 Airs and 13-inch Pros drive exactly one external display natively — a dock with three video ports doesn't change that. Do I need a Thunderbolt dock?
