Every Mac shortcut list on the internet has 100+ entries. You do not need 100. You need about 30 — and you need them grouped by what you are actually doing, so they stick. Learn one group per day and you will be faster on a Mac than you ever were on your old computer by next week.
First: the four modifier keys
Mac shortcuts are built from four keys, and knowing their symbols makes every menu in every app readable:

The single biggest beginner mistake: reaching for Control. On a Mac, almost everything you did with Ctrl on Windows is done with ⌘ Command. Ctrl+C is ⌘C, Ctrl+S is ⌘S, Ctrl+Z is ⌘Z.
The 10 everyday essentials
If you learn nothing else, learn these. They work in nearly every app:

Screenshots: three shortcuts, memorize two
Mac screenshots are genuinely better than Windows once you know the keys:
- ⌘⇧3 — capture the whole screen
- ⌘⇧4 — your cursor becomes crosshairs; drag to capture any area (press Space after to snap a whole window with a clean shadow)
- ⌘⇧5 — the full capture toolbar, including screen recording

Spotlight and app switching: the speed unlocks
- ⌘Space — opens Spotlight. Type two or three letters of any app, file, or setting and hit Return. Beginners who learn this stop using the Dock for launching within a day. It also does math and unit conversions right in the search bar.
- ⌘Tab — hold ⌘ and tap Tab to flip between open apps, exactly like Alt+Tab on Windows.
- ⌘, (comma) — opens Settings/Preferences in whatever app you are in. Works almost everywhere.
- ⌘⌥Esc — Force Quit. This is the Mac answer to Ctrl+Alt+Delete when an app locks up.
Finder and files
- Space bar — select any file and tap Space for Quick Look: a full preview of photos, PDFs, videos, and documents without opening any app. The most underrated feature on the Mac.
- ⌘Delete — move the selected file to the Trash (there is no dedicated Delete-file key press like Windows).
- ⌘⇧N — new folder.
- Return — renames the selected file (it does not open it — that is ⌘O or a double-click).
- ⌘⇧. (period) — show hidden files, if you are curious what lives under the hood.
Text editing: where Option earns its keep
- ⌘← / ⌘→ — jump to the start or end of the line
- ⌥← / ⌥→ — jump word by word
- ⌘↑ / ⌘↓ — jump to the top or bottom of the document
- Add ⇧ to any of the above — select while you jump. ⌘⇧← selects to the start of the line in one press.
Coming from Windows? Read this first

How to learn the rest (without a cheat sheet)
Open any menu in any app and look to the right of each command — the shortcut is printed right there using the symbols from the first table. That is how Mac users learn shortcuts: not from lists, but from the menus they already use. And if an app's shortcut annoys you, you can change it: System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → App Shortcuts lets you rebind any menu command in any app.
FAQ
Why does the red X not actually close the app?
On a Mac, the red button closes the window, but the app keeps running (you can see a dot under its Dock icon). To fully quit, press ⌘Q. This is normal Mac behavior, not a bug — apps relaunch faster this way.
Is there a Ctrl+Alt+Delete on Mac?
The equivalent is ⌘⌥Esc, which opens Force Quit. Select the frozen app and click Force Quit. If the whole machine is unresponsive, hold the power button for ten seconds.
What does the Option key actually do?
It is the "alternate version" key. ⌥ while clicking a menu often reveals hidden commands, ⌥ with arrow keys moves by word, and ⌥ with letter keys types special characters (⌥⇧2 is €, for example).
