MacBook Screenshot Not Working? Every Fix, From Shortcuts to Permissions (2026)

You hit Shift-Cmd-4, heard nothing, and there is no screenshot on your desktop. Before you assume the Mac is broken: in almost every case the screenshot did work and went somewhere you were not looking, or one checkbox got flipped. Here is the full fix list, in the order that actually resolves it fastest.

First: the shortcuts that should work

If none of these do anything at all, start with Fix 1. If they capture but you cannot find the file, jump to Fix 2.

Fix 1: Make sure the shortcuts are still enabled

A macOS update, a migration from an old Mac, or a third-party app (screenshot tools like CleanShot, Snagit, and some screen-sharing apps do this) can steal or disable the system shortcuts.

1. Open System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Screenshots.
2. Confirm every entry is ticked and still assigned to the default keys. If anything looks off, click Restore Defaults.
3. Quit any third-party screenshot or screen-recording app and test again — many of them intercept Shift-Cmd-4 while running.

Fix 2: Your screenshots are probably saving somewhere else

By default screenshots land on the Desktop as PNG files named "Screenshot [date] at [time]". Two things commonly hide them:

• The save location was changed. Press Shift-Cmd-5 → Options and look at the "Save to" section. If it points to Documents, Downloads, or a folder someone picked once in 2023, that is where every screenshot has been going. Set it back to Desktop or wherever you actually want them.
• iCloud Desktop sync. If Desktop & Documents syncing is on, screenshots can appear to vanish while they upload, and on a second Mac they show up in iCloud Drive instead. Open Finder and search for "Screenshot" sorted by date created — if they are there, nothing is broken.
• Want a permanent home for them? Press Shift-Cmd-5 → Options → under “Save to” choose Other Location… and pick (or create) a dedicated Screenshots folder. Every capture from then on saves there by default — no more cluttered Desktop. To change it back for a single shot, just move that file afterward; the Options setting is the default, not a per-shot choice.
• Only need it on the clipboard? Hold Control while you press the shortcut (Shift-Cmd-Control-3 or Shift-Cmd-Control-4) and the screenshot copies straight to the clipboard instead of writing a file — paste it into a message or document with Cmd-V. Nothing lands in your save folder at all.

Fix 3: The floating thumbnail trap

Since macOS Mojave, a screenshot first appears as a small floating thumbnail in the bottom-right corner for about five seconds before the file is written. Two gotchas:

• If you click the thumbnail, it opens in Markup — and if you then close it with Cmd-W without saving, the screenshot is discarded. People do this constantly and swear screenshots "aren't saving."
• If you take several shots quickly, the file only appears after the thumbnail times out. It feels like nothing happened.

To make saving instant, press Shift-Cmd-5 → Options and untick Show Floating Thumbnail.

Fix 4: Screen Recording permission (black screenshots, third-party apps)

If a screenshot comes out black or empty, or a third-party tool captures nothing, it is a permissions issue, not hardware:

1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording.
2. Toggle the app on (macOS makes you quit and reopen the app afterward).

One important exception: video in Safari from streaming services (Netflix, Apple TV+, Prime) captures as a black rectangle by design — that is DRM copy protection, and no setting turns it off.

Fix 5: A full disk means screenshots silently fail

Fix 6: Reset the screenshot system itself

If the settings all look right and it still misbehaves:

1. Restart the Mac. Genuinely — the screenshot UI service gets stuck and a reboot clears it more often than anything else.
2. Re-point the save location manually. In Terminal: defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Desktop then killall SystemUIServer. This repairs a corrupted or deleted save-location path (common after moving folders around).
3. Test in a new user account. Create one in System Settings → Users & Groups and press Shift-Cmd-3 there. If it works, a login item or preference file in your account is the culprit.
4. Update macOS. Point releases have fixed screenshot bugs several times.

Is it the keyboard, not the screenshot tool?

Open TextEdit and type Shift, Cmd, 3, 4, and 5 individually.
