Spotlight is the single most useful shortcut on a Mac, and most people barely scratch the surface of it. Press Command-Space from anywhere and a search bar drops down that can open apps, find files, do math, convert units, define words, look up the weather, and search the web — without touching your mouse. This guide covers everything Spotlight can do and how to make it faster.
Opening Spotlight
There are two ways to open it:
- Keyboard: Press Command-Space (hold Command, tap the Space bar). This works in any app, at any time.
- Menu bar: Click the magnifying-glass icon in the top-right corner of the screen. Not sure which icon is which? Our menu bar icons guide labels every one.
Start typing and results appear instantly. Press Return to open the top result, or use the arrow keys to pick a different one.
Launch apps in two keystrokes
The number-one use of Spotlight is opening apps. Press Command-Space, type the first two or three letters of any app (for example saf for Safari or mai for Mail), and hit Return. Once you get used to this you will almost never open apps from the Dock or Launchpad again — it is faster than hunting for an icon.
Find files and folders
Type any part of a file name and Spotlight surfaces matching documents, images, PDFs, and folders. A few tips:
- Highlight a result and press Command-R to reveal it in Finder instead of opening it.
- Hold Command while a result is selected to see its full file path at the bottom of the Spotlight window.
- Spotlight searches inside document contents too, not just file names — so you can find a PDF by a phrase it contains.
Do math and convert units
Spotlight has a built-in calculator and converter. Just type the problem:
- Math: type 1920 * 1080 or 15% of 240 and the answer appears at the top.
- Currency: type 100 usd to eur for a live exchange rate.
- Units: type 72 f to c, 5 miles in km, or 2 cups in ml.
You can copy the result by pressing Command-C without ever opening the Calculator app.
Define words and check the weather
Type a single word to see its dictionary definition inline. Type weather for your local forecast, or weather Toledo for another city. Type a stock ticker like AAPL for a quick price and chart.
Search the web without opening a browser
Type a search phrase and scroll to the Search the web or Siri Suggested Website section, then press Return to open it in your default browser. It is often quicker than clicking to the browser first and typing there.
Narrow your search with keywords
Spotlight understands plain-language filters. Try:
- kind:pdf budget — only PDFs with “budget” in the name.
- kind:image or kind:email — restrict to one file type.
- created:today or modified:this week — filter by date.
- author:Jane — documents by a specific person.
Make Spotlight faster and more private
Open System Settings → Spotlight (called Siri & Spotlight on some macOS versions) to control what it searches:
- Search Results: turn off categories you never use (fonts, developer files, etc.) to make results cleaner and faster.
- Spotlight Privacy: click the button and add folders you want Spotlight to never index — useful for sensitive documents or huge folders that slow things down.
If Spotlight stops finding things
Occasionally the search index gets corrupted and results go missing or stale. The fix is to force a reindex: open System Settings → Spotlight → Spotlight Privacy, add your whole drive (Macintosh HD) to the exclusion list, wait about a minute, then remove it. macOS rebuilds the index from scratch, which usually takes 15–60 minutes.
